The Information Commissioner is hosting the first meeting of the »Initiative 20i7« at Bled on 14-15th May, attended by high representatives of national data protection authorities from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia. The Information Commissioner’s initiative follows the example of similar informal cooperation of the data protection authorities of the Nordic countries which also share historical, cultural and legal background and which have been closely cooperating and sharing experiences.
The members of the initiative agreed that close international cooperation among different national data protection authorities is a prerequisite for effective protection of personal data in modern society. This is why on this occasion the high representatives of the data protection authorities joined in »Initiative 20i7« signed the “Declaration of co-operation of Data Protection Authorities in Initiative 20i7” agreeing on regular annual informal meetings of the initiative and active exchange of expert opinions, experiences and best practices with the aim of addressing common challenges encountered in protection of personal data.
The aim of »Initiative 20i7« is to joint efforts of all the participating supervisory authorities from the region, since the authorities face similar challenges and technical questions. Numerous companies and public sector organisations in the region exchange and transfer personal data cross-border, therefore harmonising the interpretation of data protection standards and guaranteeing effective protection of personal data in the region is an important economic benefit for all the participating countries. There was common agreement among the participants that the initiative in the area of human rights as a model of best practice will greatly benefit the work of all the participating authorities taking into account common economical and historical framework and contribute to good relations and cooperation between all the states in the region.
