iDecide

+ -

The iDecide project was carried out from 2020 to 2022 and aimed to educate three target groups (older minors (16-18 years), older adults (65+ years) and the working population) about the reform of the legislative framework on personal data protection and, in particular, about the fundamental rights guaranteed to them by the personal data protection legislation. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which entered into force in May 2018, and national Personal Data Protection Act represent a significant expansion of the scope of obligations and tasks for a large number of controllers. On the other hand, the Regulation also expands the set of rights of individuals.

The main activities of iDecide included:

1) Creation of three sets of freely available, printed and electronic, accurate and high-quality educational materials on the new framework for the protection of personal data, with a particular focus on the rights that individuals have and how to exercise them.

2) Six training seminars on personal data protection for secondary school teachers and education professionals, professionals from third age education institutions and professionals from trade unions and labour associations:

  • On 28 January 2021, a seminar titled "How my data is protected in the employment relationship" was organised for trade union and labour association professionals. Also, in autumn 2021 a seminar was held in cooperation with the Trade Union of Education, Science and Culture of Slovenia. In these seminars, the Information Commissioner representatives presented to the participants in particular the rights enjoyed by individuals under the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation and the protection of personal data in the context of the employment relationship.
  • On 26 May 2021, the Information Commissioner organised a seminar aimed at familiarising teachers and education professionals with the content of personal data protection, so that they could better pass it on to their students. The seminar presented the iDecide project and a handbook for teenagers and secondary school students titled “My Data, My Business”. On 30 November 2021, in the framework of the ARNES Knowledge Network 2021 conference, the Information Commissioner held a seminar on the protection of personal data of teenagers, aimed at teachers and other education professionals. Information Commissioner experts explained why privacy protection is important and what risks modern life poses to privacy; what rights teenagers enjoy in relation to their personal data and how they can make use of these rights; the issue of protecting personal data online and the dangers it poses to young people; some aspects of personal data protection in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; and a handbook for teenagers and secondary school students entitled My Data, My Business.
  • On 29 September 2021, the Information Commissioner held a seminar on personal data protection for the elderly as part of the Festival of the Third Age. The seminar was aimed at all visitors to the festival, but especially to visitors involved in adult and older people's education. The iDecide project and the handbook for the older population "You decide about your data" were also presented during the seminar. On 14 January 2022, in cooperation with the Institute for Intergenerational Cooperation Simbioza Genesis Ljubljana, the Information Commissioner held the second seminar on personal data protection for the elderly, where Information Commissioner experts explained to the participants what privacy and personal data protection are and why it is important to protect these rights, what rights they have vis-à-vis banks, insurance companies and health institutions as controllers of their personal data, and how to protect their data online and during COVID-19. The participants were also presented with the handbook "You decide about your data".

3) Daily expert support to the general public and target groups by Information Commissioner experts in the form of: free telephone advice, written opinions (individuals can send questions to the Information Commissioner's e-mail box), publication of information and educational materials on the Information Commissioner websites (www.ip-rs.si, www.upravljavec.si and www.tiodlocas.si) and the delivery of educational lectures at external events.

The project was funded by the European Commission under the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020.

The Information Commissioner has produced three guides as part of the iDecide project, aimed at individuals of different age groups:

  • for older minors: MY DATA, MY THING and a cheatsheet;
  • for working population: HOW IS MY DATA PROTECTED IN THE WORKPLACE? and
  • for older adults: YOU DECIDE ABOUT YOUR DATA.

The manuals are available in Slovenian only (link: https://www.ip-rs.si/publikacije/priro%C4%8Dniki-in-smernice/).
